DeforestACTION Updates from Borneo!
About this category: Environment

Over the past 50 days, the Eco Warriors associated with the DeforestACTION project have been hard at work supporting projects in Borneo, Indonesia that empower local communities to take action against deforestation and support orangutans who depend on rainforest ecosystems. I had the honor of visiting the Eco Warriors to see first-hand to how the online learning and fundraising support of youth and schools around the world has translated into real-life impact for communities in this region.

The Eco Warriors are working in four teams to raise awareness of the impacts of deforestation, and to take tangible steps to help them. The Education Team put together an educational theatre program that culminated in a series of presentations to schools in the West Borneo region. They have been promoting dialogue between students, teachers, and the Eco-Warriors about the important topics of deforestation, palm oil, and protecting wildlife such as the orangutan. So far they've presented to over 600 students, including  attendees at a conference for educators and government leaders in the region.

The Reforestation Team has developed a nursery in the community of Tembak, taking factors into account, such as flood levels, shade versus sunlight, and accessibility. During my visit, they were preparing seedlings for planting. Additionally, the team intends to hold a workshop with the local kids about proper reforesting techniques, developing a sense of community, accomplishment, and ownership for the forests among the children of Tembak.

The Mapping Team has been flying to great heights! Their team flew an unmanned drone airplane over the village of Tembak, taking aerial video and still images of the community and surrounding areas. The data will help protect communities from encroaching palm oil plantations by viewing the area from a whole new angle. The team also intends on mapping other communities during their stay in Borneo, with the goal of empowering local people by providing them with accurate records of their land.

The Animal Rescue team has been working hard with the people of Tembak to create a release site for orangutans of the region. The community of Tembak has donated 63 hectares of land to act as a forest school where orangutans can be introduced to forest life. Tembak also has 20,000 hectares of protected forest where the orangutans can be released after graduating from forest school.  The team has successfully built the observation hut for veterinarians and carers of newly released orangutans, as well as set up the cage and water tank.

For more information on how you and your students can get involved, visit www.deforestaction.org.

*Special thanks goes to co-author of this post, Eco-Warrior Mark Kuroski

weird feeling!

i can not explain because i fear long explanations.. i fear this feeling.. the ground moves, the roof moves. i can see the past as if it is taking place in front of my eyes now! the future seems touchable, knowable.. i am alone inside all this mess, gazing at the reliving memories of my life, thinking of the futre how it will be, and never forget you.

TIG November Multilingual Star Interview!

Every month, the Multilingual Community names its most outstanding volunteers as Multilingual TIG Stars!  This month we want to recognize an awesome volunteer who is working very hard towards the goal of  launching their team Language:  Doreen Reinhold from the German Team! Congratulations Doreen- your hard work and dedication is really appreciated!

1. When did you become involved with TakingITGlobal’s online volunteer team? What motivated you to become an online volunteer?

I started volunteering a bit more than a year ago. When I first learned about TIG I was amazed about the various opportunities for youth movements and young volunteers from different regions of the world to connect and work together.

2. What attracts you to your role as a volunteer?

The opportunity of being a part of the TIG community and helping to make TIG more accessible for the German-speaking youth attracted me a lot.

 3. What have you learned from the experience so far?

3) From a more technical side I learned lots of new English words and a bit about the CMS TIG uses J.  Through translating, I became aware of a number of TIG-initiatives and functions on the website I hadn’t recognized before.  But, most importantly, I met lots of other volunteers and made a new friends!

 4. What advice would you give other young people out there interested in becoming online volunteers?

4) Being an online volunteer is great fun- but it can be a little lonesome sometimes. Before you choose to volunteer you should know exactly what you want to do! Be an online volunteer or do something that involves a little bit more ‘action’, work on the administrative side of a project or ‘in the field’, support a large human rights initiative or a grass-roots project with disabled children - opportunities are plenty, but at the end of the day, volunteering is work, too. Choose something you feel passionate about and that fits your lifestyle. That makes it easier to keep up you motivation. Volunteering should be fun, not another item on your to-do list !

 5. What are your overall thoughts on the experience?

5) It’s been exciting to see the German TIG-site coming into being – and I can’t wait to finally seeing it being launched!

My First Blog!

Hello ! I've decided to take the plunge and start.. a ..Blog! A Blog? Whose a Blog? Am I going to be a Blog-er? Like a tweet-er, or a facebook-er? but wait a second.. WHAT is a blog?

According to (not so trusted OR credible OR reliable, yet the key to many questions floating in my head) Wikipedia..A blog is a website with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other materials graphics and videos.

Regular entries of commentary? About what? All the things that interest me, or things I want to learn more about ..Current events, history, books, music, fitness and nutrition, food, science, movies, psychology, energy, environment, war, peace, people- dead or alive, famous and not so famous.

Descriptions of events? Places I visited, places I have yet to visit, things I've seen, concerts, restaurants, festivals.

"Other" Materials graphics and videos? Paintings I love, youtube clips everyone should watch, music that I believe is candy for the soul.

Welcome to the inner-workings and ramblings of my world (a.k.a my mind).

AUGUST TIG STAR!

Every month, the Multilingual Community names its most outstanding volunteer as a Multilingual TIG Star! This month we want to recognize Deniz Ovalıoğlu from the Turkish Team! Deniz is an awesome volunteer who is working very hard to launch Turkish! Congratulations Deniz- your hard work and dedication is really appreciated! We asked Deniz to answer a few questions about her volunteer experience with TIG. Read on to hear what she had to say!

1. When did you become involved with TakingITGlobal’s online volunteer team? What motivated you to become an online volunteer?

I have been a part of TIG Since August 16th 1999.  My best friend Gulce is an online volunteer and she informed me of all the great work TIG is involved with. I truly believe that being informed about issues is important to live in our globalized world. I enjoy helping TIG spread knowledge about global issues on the Turkish platform. I am very happy to be a part of TIG.

TIG'in bir parçası olmaktan mutluluk duyuyorum.

2. What attracts you to your role as a volunteer?

What attracts me to my role as a volunteer is gaining pleasure from doing something for the planet, and finding new people to cooperate with.  I am not concerned about money.

3. What have you learned from the experience so far?

I believe that globalization is damaging the world. Through the TIG platform, we need to learn how to live in a globalized world without causing damage.

4. What advice would you give other young people out there interested in becoming online volunteers?

If you are interested In becoming an online volunteer, Do not wait ! You will be very happy to be a part of this platform.

Eğer ilginizi çekiyorsa sakın beklemeyin! Bu platformun bir parçası olmaktan mutluluk duyacaksınız.

5. What are your overall thoughts on the experience?

Being on a team such is really amazing. What you do and how you do your job is very important.

All the Best

Deniz

Monday Tuesday.. happy days. FRIDAY what a day!

Friday night proved to be a difficult commute home to say the least. I boarded the packed subway car and braced myself for the long ride back to the Katima-house! The lot of us arrived at Bloor and Young Station and we were prometley told to leave the car! The station was now closed and we all had to make our way to street level.

After getting hypatheically sea-seek in the mob of people pushing to and fro to get to the street- we all merged into even more people who were already standing on the street! We were now supposed to get in line for a shuttle bus to arrive and take us to our specified destination. The only problem was there stacks and stacks of people trying to rush onto one bus.

I waited patiently to get a spot on the bus. Boy, that was not the right call! A fellow, who obviously could not wait a moment longer in the massive line decided it was his turn to enter the bus! He ran as if he was a backliner running down the football feild. I was the football he tackled to the grownd. I landed flat on my back and was in a good amount of pain when a police officer helped me to my feet. He gave me a nod and I nodded back and he was off to help the next person who had been pummeled.

To add to the caious the wind suddenly picked up. There were so many people and such a big wind that I was sure there would be people flow right into the air! This was no joke (well maybe a little.)

I decided to step out of the way of all the quarter-backs, feather weights to be carried away and police officers by calling my Katima-family to come and gather their important parcel (myself) and travel away from the madness at Young and Bloor Street.

packing those bags

There is a problem with leaving, in that I will inevitably have to pack my bags and walk out the door. The city has been a hoot. Packing is never easy, but what about packing up your life? I now have to fit everything I own, accumulated and worn over the last year- into ONE luggage bag!!!

This is a task I have been putting off, and I am not even a procrastinator.

Any suggestions?

These White White Walls

There are currently 12 days left in the Katimavik program. 12 days to make Katima-bread, 12 days to live with my 12 roommates and 12 days to say goodbye.

As things are wrapping up with our volunteer work we are nearing the end of this venture. Our collective project initiative is happening tomorrow night. We are hosting a Katimavik Alumni Renuion guests are encouraged to bring canned food products to we can then donate them to a food-drive within our community in Toronto. A lot of preperation has been done and our group is excited the day is finially coming!

The days are winding down quickly, more than what I would have expected, we are stripping down everything we have posted in the house in anticpation of being busy the next week. As our posters, drawings documents and flags are being plucked off the wall... there are feelings of emptiness. I really never took notice to how white the walls are in our Katima-house. These walls are white, white, white!

Our group has had a blast! Our white walls are now subject to the next group and their three months of adding to the white walls to make it colourful, creative, crazy and SMART.

To the next chapter!

Let the Drummer Kick That!
Related to country: Brazil
About this category: Education

Samba for the soul.

Over the weekend I was given the pleasure to jam with some of the members from Toronto's Samba Squad. The Katimavik, Toronto group was invited by Katimavik Project Assistant/ Samba Squad member, Robbie Dupriest  to learn a few beats from, "the most dynamic and sought-after acts on the Canadian World Music scene." Samba Squad uses the sultry Samba rhythms and matches with a harmonized beat. Rick Lazar, an incredibly talented musical instructor, uses his background in jazz to make a sensational fusion with Afro-Brazil, Afro-Cuba, North and West Africa, as well as elements of Urban Funk and Hip-hop to create "global grooves!" The group had previously volunteered to help the Samba Squad during the Fire and Ice festival and was rewarded with a performance that truly inspired us and left us wanting to learn more!

I was apprehensive to jam with the group and especially with Lazar, but the group was more than welcoming and patient. I picked up the bells which are a strange resemblance to cow bells which have been welded together. I chose them because I was informed they would be one of the easiest to discover. Easier sure, but they are one of the loudest instruments in the circle making it very obvious if I were to make a mistake.

Lazar showed me that even I can hold a beat! Our group hit along to beats which derive from Brazilian carnival drumming. Which essentially sound like "brak, brak, brak- tack, tack" or at least that is how I grove to it in my head. We eventually became our parts and moved on to calling and answering. Lazar made sure I never went astray by using a whistle to keep me focused on the beginning beats. The unity of the group was amazing in my opinion, we actually played as one (which doesn't happen in the Katima-group too often- just joking!) Once we had faintly mastered the call and answers we then took small marching formations, my favourite part!

We were not perfect by any means but it was our first lesson and I am impressed with myself as I walked away from the workshop recognizing how to count  beats inside rifts for the first time in my musical life. I can relate the sensation to skipping, when you are first learning to play double dutch (with two skipping ropes) and you have no idea when you should leap in, when to jump/ land or when to dodge out. With a patient teacher, slower speeds and repetition you can now pick up the pace of your feet.

I spent my entire commute home on the subway listening to the beats the steel on the tracks made. Counting, listening and enjoying (in my head) what I had recently gained knowledge!

I suddenly have an inkling to go dancing!

Tag, I Geo-cache you!
About this category: Technology

Katimavik group Toronto, made it a point to endure

the weather yesterday afternoon to

Geo-cache into East York

quarters of Toronto to discover what  treasures lye to be found.Geocaching is a world-wide game of hiding and seeking a treasure. The goal is to pinpoint a geocache using a GPS technology  and coordinates to define the location of each geocache you are seeking. There is however an etiquette to the game so all seekers can enjoy. The game etiquette states you can take a treasure once found,

as long as you replace a new one back in the EXACT location you find your treasure.

You also have to make sure your treasure is of equal or greater value then the treasure you are receiving.

Now that you have found the cache you are expected to write about your find in the cache logbook,

then log your experience on www.geocaching.com.

Caches can be hidden both above and below ground. Different caches have different levels of intensities and you should be aware of the difficulty before you set out on your adventure!

The Katimavik group geared up Sunday morning and found four out of the four geocaches we were searching for. The amount of snow on the ground made it more difficult to locate each cache but the entire group of 12 had an amazing time during the hunt. I was the successful geocacher of the first location.

Upon discovering the tool box which housed the geocache or group waited as I slowly opened the box in

anticipation of our first ever find! We uncovered a set of playing cards (which were frozen into the box) a logbook

and a small kinder-egg surprise toy.

Our group decided the only cache we could take without ruining the cards was the kinder-surprise. We then left a special surprise in its place. Our group went on to find three more caches and had an exhausting but adventurous day! If you would like to track the Katimavik geocaches you can find them using "A walk in the Park," coordinates located in Toronto Ontario. Coordinates for this geocache and others in your area will be online at http://www.geocaching.com

Valentine`s Day?
About this category: Media

(Saint) Valentine`s Day? - as the commercial holiday approaches I get less excited.

I consider myself a romantic at heart but I am not so fond of the commercialism aspects the day brings.

*Piles of chocolate and sweets? Received from admirers and friends, actually anyone who knows me knows, I am not a huge fan of chocolate.

*Flowers? I prefer wild flowers.

*Cards?- You should be able to tell me in person how you feel!

*Gifts?- Not impressed, I am (mostly) not a materialistic girl, I would rather see that you care through actions.

I won`t say I hate V-day but I am not a huge supporter of what it has become. I personally believe if you love me or anyone for that matter... you should be able to show it everyday. Not shoving all your kindness and intentions into one afternoon/ evening.

FUN FACT: Valentine`s  was deleted from the Roman Calendar of Saints in 1969, according to Wikipedia.

About this category: Culture

Nine days with the Marwaha family

During the Katimavik program nine days are spent with a 'host' family. Katimavik participants share homes with a family from the city in which their rotation is taking place. Conveniently enough I scouted a home of my own with one of my brother's past Katimavik group members in Mississauga. Taking the GO-Train for the first time was easy enough but trying to decipher which platform to take home from Union station was a huge undertaking. Once I boarded the train, it was a breeze from there compared to the subway or light-rail. Home life was fantastic with the Marwaha family. Neha, Yesh and Sushma are all wonderful people. I truly got spoiled, the family took me to their local gym to go swimming and work out which is great if you are sitting at your desk from Monday- Friday not getting a good helping of exercise.

I was fortunate enough during the week to be taken to the family's Hare Krishna Temple, entitled: Iskcon Toronto, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. When I walked in to the Temple I was greeted by devotees who were chanting, "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare."  The chant was explained to me as a spiritual call to the Lord who will provide positive energy which protects our soles. I was in aw of the beauty of the Temple, the high ceiling really accented the marble surfaces and painted sculptures of the Guru's. Devotional service started which was given by young devotees who are preparing to become ambassadors of the Temple. This really helped me understand the teachings of Temple as I listened to explanations of the mind, karma, and different Guru's through the words of children. As devotional came to a close the crowd of maybe 80 people got in line for a fully-vegan Indian meal, which is free of charge for anyone who chooses to visit the Temple. My plate was full of traditional Indian food including tasty naan bread, lentil paste, potato curry, raita (a garlic, cucumber- yogurt with tiny rice balls inside) and mithai (an Indian sweet). I was left feeling very full and wanting to attempt to duplicate the recipes! After what felt like an Indian feast we all gathered round to dance and chant! Neha and Sushma gave me a truly insiders perspective on how their culture dances. I learnt a few steps, surprisingly enough not embarrassing myself too much! This cultural experience will be something I will never forget!

If you would like more information about the Hare Krishna Temple or to view more photos visit: http://toronto.iskcon.ca/

My host family was most welcoming and hospitable. I will miss the long talks with Yesh on world issues while drinking tea. I will miss the smell of the small shrine in the families home (lemon-grass and sage I believe), I will miss this family and their friends. Thank you so very much!! - Namaste

Incendies- a Film in Review
About this category: Peace & Conflict

Incendies A Film in Review

Jan. 24

By Rachel Ward

The film Incendies is a shocking tale depicting a devastating era in one women’s life. Screenplay for the French-Canadian film is done by Denis Villeneuve. Villeneuve showcases the work of Lubna Azabal, Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette and Rémy Girard. The film begins with a shocking last will and testament which was left for a son and daughter. Nawal Marwan leaves a last request to be buried, “naked, no prayers, face down, away from the world.” As the cinematography unfolds darkness, which surrounded Nawal’s life the audience will come to understand why this wasn’t such a strange request.

Nawal Marwan’s life is expertly interwoven, shifting back and forth through time. Placed in the present; a son and daughters struggle to decipher the truth within their mother’s life. In the past, the story flips to a depiction of a Nawal’s struggle to know her son. Son and daughter of Nawal, Jeanne (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin) and Simon (Maxim Gaudette) travel to the Middle East in hopes of honouring their mother’s last wishes and deliver to their brother and father a set of sealed envelopes. The voyage not only crosses boarders but pushes the viewer’s threshold of adaptation. Incendies, once translated from French means, ‘I burn’ this movie ad-lives the name given by portraying tragedy, heartbreak, courage and love and will leave the audience deeply affected.

The film was released at the Toronto International Film Festival and I can truly see why it was Canada’s submission for Best Foreign-Language Film at the Academy Awards.

I give Incendies two thumbs up, way up.
